With Apple’s much-anticipated “It’s Glowtime” iPhone 16 event just days away—set for this Monday, September 9 at 10am PT/1pm ET/6pm BST (or 3am AEST on September 10)—renowned tech insider Mark Gurman has dropped a major hint: two new AirPods models are on the horizon, while two others likely won’t be arriving just yet.
In his latest report for Bloomberg, Gurman provided his most detailed forecast yet on Apple’s AirPods lineup, raising hopes for what may be unveiled at next week’s event. While it’s not official confirmation, it’s close enough for those who trust Gurman’s impeccable Apple-related track record.
So, what did Gurman reveal exactly? Let’s break down his predictions:
Two New AirPods Models: What to Expect
According to Gurman, Apple is prepping two new AirPods to replace both the second-generation (2019) entry-level model and the third-generation mid-tier version, also known as AirPods 3.
Both of these new versions are expected to adopt a design similar to the AirPods Pro, though Gurman didn’t specify whether that would resemble the original 2019 Pros or the AirPods Pro 2. What’s clear, however, is that the new AirPods will come with updated cases, USB-C charging, and enhanced audio quality.
Apple plans to differentiate the two models by offering the mid-tier version with a more premium case. This upgraded case will reportedly feature a built-in speaker, making it easier to locate with Apple’s Find My app, and noise cancellation to rival that of the AirPods Pro.
A Bigger Push into Hearing Health
Gurman also noted a new focus for AirPods: expanding their role in hearing health. Apple is allegedly working to turn AirPods into a viable alternative to hearing aids, even allowing them to conduct hearing tests. This project, codenamed “Yodel,” is in the works, though delays may push the release of these features until later.
What About the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max?
For those hoping to see a new version of the AirPods Pro at Monday’s event, Gurman had some disappointing news. While Apple is developing an updated Pro model with a revamped design and improved active noise cancellation (ANC), this so-called “AirPods Pro 3” isn’t expected to debut until sometime next year. As for the AirPods Max? Apple’s high-end headphones are set to get new color options and a USB-C port, replacing the current Lightning connector in compliance with EU regulations. However, with plenty of current inventory still on hand, Gurman predicts the next-generation AirPods Max won’t be making an appearance on Monday either.
A Potential Setback and Final Thoughts
One final tidbit from Gurman: a few weeks ago, Apple discovered a bug in the new AirPods that caused rapid battery drain. Fortunately, the issue, which was software-related, has since been resolved, and the units are already in production.
It’s worth remembering that Apple’s biggest AirPods release to date was predicted earlier this year. A dual launch at next week’s event would certainly live up to that expectation. While it’s disappointing that we likely won’t see the AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2 on Monday, it’s been over two years since the AirPods 3 were released—long enough to make the arrival of two fresh models a welcome change.
Pricing Speculation
Gurman didn’t offer specifics on pricing, but considering the current AirPods 3 retail for around $179/£169/AU$279, it’s reasonable to expect the mid-tier version to fall within that range.
As for the entry-level model? While it’s hard to say for sure, wouldn’t a $99/£99/AU$149 price point—something competitive with the popular Nothing Ear (1) buds—be a pleasant surprise?
