Enhanced Security for Your Peace of Mind

In May, we learned about a new Theft Detection Lock feature coming to Android phones. Now, this functionality is rolling out to users, providing an extra layer of security in case your phone gets stolen.

Renowned tipster Mishaal Rahman has reported that Brazil is the first to receive this update. The rest of the world should follow soon, with Google indicating the feature would appear on phones “later” in 2024.

According to Google, Theft Detection Lock will “automatically recognize suspicious signals and proactively protect your data on the device.” Essentially, it detects when your phone has been stolen and takes action.

Artificial intelligence algorithms are employed to identify when a phone has been taken. Google mentions that the AI looks for “common motion associated with theft,” likely referring to a quick yank followed by rapid movement away from the scene.

Lock It Down

As the name implies, Theft Detection Lock will secure your phone if it suspects a theft is in progress. If Android mistakenly thinks your phone has been stolen, you can simply unlock it to resume using your apps.

This feature will eventually be available on all devices running Android 10 or higher, covering most modern phones. If your device isn’t made by Google, it might take a bit longer to receive the update.

This is part of a broader suite of protection features being introduced on Android. Your phone will also lock down if there are numerous failed authentication attempts in a row or if the device is taken offline for an extended period. Additionally, whether you’re on Android or iOS, ensure your phone is registered with the built-in location tracking feature. This allows you to lock and even wipe your handset remotely if it gets lost or stolen.
