New Main and Ultra-Wide Sensors on the Horizon
Apple has been pushing the boundaries of smartphone camera technology, and the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro Max appears to be no exception. Recent rumors suggest that two critical sensors in the iPhone 16 Pro Max will receive significant upgrades, promising enhanced photography capabilities.
The IMX903 Sensor: A Leap Forward
According to leaks from OvO Baby Sauce OvO on Weibo (via MacRumors), the iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature a brand-new Sony IMX903 sensor in place of the IMX803 used by its predecessor, the iPhone 15 Pro Max. While the resolution remains at 48 megapixels, this new sensor is expected to deliver substantial improvements in image quality.
Ultra-Wide Camera Boost
The iPhone 16 Pro Max could take an even more significant leap with its ultra-wide camera. Reports indicate that this year’s model will sport a 48-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, a substantial upgrade from the 12-megapixel sensor found in the current iPhone. Unfortunately, the 12-megapixel 5x optical zoom won’t see any enhancements, but the overall improvement in the rear camera system is still noteworthy.
Upgrades for the iPhone 16 Pro
Not only is the Pro Max getting attention, but the standard iPhone 16 Pro is also in line for camera enhancements. According to the same source, the iPhone 16 Pro will feature a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and its telephoto lens will match the 5x zoom capability of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, the primary camera on the iPhone 16 Pro won’t receive an upgrade. With two out of three sensors getting improvements, the Pro model is poised to deliver impressive photography performance.
Taking the Rumors with a Grain of Salt
While these leaks are exciting, it’s essential to approach them cautiously. The tech world is no stranger to rumors, and sometimes they don’t materialize as expected. However, the consistent mention of a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera and an improved main sensor for the iPhone 16 Pro Max lends credibility to these reports.
The Super Telephoto Mystery
One point of contention is the possibility of a ‘super telephoto’ camera for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Older leaks hinted at this feature, but it’s unclear whether it refers to the upcoming iPhone Ultra (which may not launch this year). For now, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for official announcements.

Come September, we’ll finally get the full picture. The iPhone 16 lineup, including the base iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, is expected to make its debut. Stay tuned for the official camera specs and prepare for another leap forward in mobile photography! 📸📱
